Cost to Add a Bathroom to a Basement

Updated

Short answer

HomeGuide puts a basement bathroom at $2,500 to $12,500 (national, February 6, 2026). Thumbtack says $2,500 to $5,000 with fixtures at $800 to $900 each. An ejector pit, if the toilet sits below the sewer, is on top.

No cost guide publishes a Rockford figure (Angi, HomeGuide, Thumbtack and Fixr have no Rockford page), so every range on this site is a national average or a Chicago-area or Columbus, Ohio guide, and each one is labelled that way.

What swings the cost

  • Whether the drain works by gravity. If the fixtures sit below the building drain, sanitary waste has to go to a gas-tight, covered, vented sump with automatic ejection equipment. See the ejector guide.
  • Fixture count. A toilet and sink is a half bath. A shower adds the largest fixture line; Angi shows $1,100 to $8,500 for a shower.
  • Concrete. Cutting a slab for drain lines is labor-heavy. The guides do not price it as a separate line.
  • Ventilation. A bathroom fan vented outdoors helps humidity; EPA's guidance is to vent moisture-generating appliances outdoors. See the humidity guide.
  • Finishes. Tile, vanity and glass are the usual upgrades.

Permits and who can do the work

A basement bathroom needs a plumbing permit, and Illinois lets a city or county issue it only to a licensed plumber or the owner-occupant of a single family home. The permit fees and rules are in the plumbing permit guide. Loves Park prices plumbing per fixture opening at $15.00 and counts a sump pump as one.

Ceiling and layout

A bathroom can have a ceiling as low as 6 feet 8 inches under the 2021 code. Put it under the lowest part of the basement. See the ceiling height guide.

What to ask a bidder

  • Is the ejector pit included, and what size is the pump?
  • Who pulls the plumbing permit?
  • Which fixtures are in the price, and who buys them?
  • How is the slab cut and patched?

Bathroom costs sit inside a bigger project; see what a finish includes and the cost page.

An add-up for fixtures

Angi prices a toilet at $225 to $530 each and a shower at $1,100 to $8,500 each. Adding them gives $1,325 to $9,030, which is the fixture part of a full bath before plumbing labor, framing, finishing and any ejector pit. HomeGuide's $2,500 to $12,500 for a whole bathroom sits in the same neighbourhood at the low end and runs higher at the top. That is our arithmetic from published ranges, not a quote.

Half bath or full bath

  • A half bath is a toilet and a sink. It needs less floor area and avoids a shower drain.
  • A full bath adds the shower or tub, which is the largest single fixture line.
  • Either needs the plumbing permit and the vent, and either may need the ejector pit.
  • A rough-in without fixtures is a way to spread the cost; ask whether the permit and inspection cover it.

Ventilation and moisture

A bathroom is a steady source of humidity in a room that already runs damp. EPA recommends keeping indoor humidity below 60 percent, ideally between 30 and 50 percent, and says to vent moisture-generating appliances outdoors. Price a fan and a vent run to the outside as part of the bathroom, and keep the dehumidifier plan in mind. See the humidity guide.

Quick answers

How much does it cost to add a bathroom in a basement?

HomeGuide puts it at $2,500 to $12,500 and Thumbtack at $2,500 to $5,000, both national. See the cost page for every source and date.

Does a basement bathroom need a sewage ejector?

Only if the fixtures sit below the building drain. Below-sewer waste goes to a gas-tight, covered, vented sump with automatic ejection equipment, per the Illinois Plumbing Code.

Can I do the plumbing myself?

Illinois lets a city or county issue a plumbing permit to the owner-occupant of a single family residence as well as to a licensed plumber. The work is still inspected.

How low can a basement bathroom ceiling be?

6 feet 8 inches under the 2021 model code, versus 7 feet for other habitable space.
